Make It Happen For Women: The Diary of a Job Searching Woman: Mar 3: Companies are hiring!

Dear JobSearchingWoman:

Companies are hiring, but you have to make it easier for them to hire you. When people put together their resume, it’s an historical account of their career. Companies want to know more. Companies want to know how you are going to help them in these difficult economic times. So, think about what they need and that’s what you put on your resume.
Please remember that women look at their job searches differently than men. I didn’t say “worse” or “not as good”…I said different. If you can realize that a woman is wired differently and embrace those differences, then you can have a competitive edge.

Very few people actually get a job from a job board, so don’t spend all your time there. If you are going to put together a networking plan, do it from a business development stand point. Trying to find the hiring manager is not enough. Also try to find the person above the hiring manager. Remember, resumes don’t travel up the corporate ladder very well. But they do flow down.

Don’t just schedule time at Starbucks and meet someone and ask them for help. It might make you feel good, but it probably won’t land you a job.

Think from an employer’s point of view. We call that "Employer-Centric" and it works.

More importantly, remember that companies are hiring and that someone is going to get the job…it might as well be you!

Don’t give up!!

Make It Happen For Women: The Diary of a Job Searching Woman: Mar 1 – Don’t Give Up!

Dear JobSearchingWoman:

I know that you are discouraged. I know that looking for a job is a tough time in a woman’s life. How do I know? Cause I have been there…many times.

Part of a woman’s frustrations is that she is trying to do what she’s always done which is not working in 2010. But, old habits are hard to break and the “Networking is the only way to find a job” isn’t working anymore. Only 4-10% of the people in this country get a job from a job board and for professionals it’s less than 2%. Recruiters are getting reqs from their clients that are asking for everything under the moon and that makes their job more difficult.

So…you have to do something different. But first you have to get control of your mind. Take a few minutes to sit quietly and take some deep breaths. Think of things that empower you in your life. The times when you were on top. Spend some quiet time just trying to calm your speeding heart rate.

Keeping calm and focused is the first step. I’ve asked Our Job Search Expert to blog tomorrow about some tips on helping you….so stay tuned.

Remember…women are resilient . Once we know what to do…we will chew up anything in our paths.

Hang in there….In the meantime…here are some resume tips put together by our team.

Best Regards,

Vicki

Make It Happen For Women: The Diary of a Job Searching Woman: Feb 18: I’m on the roller coaster again!

Why are my emotions going up and down? One day I think I want to stay with my company forever and believe that we are really ready to grow to the next level and then the next, I feel like the world is coming to an end.

Yesterday was fabulous at work. The energy in the office was good and my boss was in a great mood. We have a new client with a promise of new and continued revenue. We don’t need to lay off, we need to get out there and sell, sell, sell! We just need more new business.

Wish everyday was like yesterday. I actually felt like I could run the mile in seconds! My boss promises things will be better. Should I stop my job search for a while and regroup? Who am I kidding. I haven’t even been sending out resumes or networking because I’m so discouraged about my job search.

What is best for my career?

Make It Happen For Women: The Diary of a Job Searching Woman: Jan 19: I'm sick and tired of the emotional roller coaster!

I'm tired of working hard at work only to have it be "not enough." I'm tired working, trying to make ends meet, trying to take of my kids and doing a job search at the same time. I'm tired of changing my resume and I'm tired of thinking day and night about my career and how I'm going to take care of my kids, send them to college AND save for retirement on only one salary!

HR doesn't call back. The interview I went on - What a fiasco! No one is calling back or returning my phone calls. This is ridiculous! What has happened to common sense?

I'm tired of all the networking meetings. They are depressing! I'm surrounded by miserable unemployed people and come out even more depressed! I don't know what to do or where to go.

I can't seem to get my emotions into check. I had better get a grip on myself, because there is no one to take care of me but ME!

Make It Happen For Women: The Diary of a Job Searching Woman: Jan 12: Still no word on my interview. Work is going better.

Things have calmed down and my boss is actually smiling. We had a meeting today about the layoffs and he's assured me no more are coming. He really is a nice guy and I know he cares about me. It's a great company and I would really like to stay here, but I'm nervous now. He assured me everything is OK and so I'm going to believe him.

No word on my interview yet. I'm going to give it to the end of this week and then call them. I was too tired to work on my job search last night. This woman was tired! I like the way my career has gone at my company. I really don't want to leave.

I gave my resume to a few networking contacts and I'm committed to going to my networking group once a week.

Today is a good day.

Make It Happen For women: The Diary of a Job Searching Woman: Jan 5: The memory of layoffs.

December was awful with more layoffs. The whole month and holidays are a blur. Not sure how I got through them.
My boss called me in the office the week before Christmas and told me he was laying off more people. He didn't even give me an opportunity to have a discussion about this. He was very cold. I actually felt sorry for the guy.

But my department is a mess. Everyone is scared and I'm trying to lead them and get the job done for our company and clients. I put on the happy smile and I find these positive words, that I would just consider big lies, coming out of my mouth. You know those kinds of words. The kind you say to your kids when you know everything is a mess and you're trying to put a smile on their face. If I can't get this team moving I may be out of a job.

I tried to work on my job search over the holidays but I was upset about the layoffs and trying to do my shopping, baking and wrapping at the same time. Finally I just gave up.

It's the new year. I'm going to redo my resume (again) and start pushing it out on the job boards. I am going to set up more networking meetings and call some recruiters (again). I'm really not sure what to do, except I know this is a numbers game and I need to move forward rapidly. I can't be without income for my kids.

I AM going to be positive. I AM going to make time for my job search today. After all, my career is important to me and the bottom line is. I will lose everything if I lose my job.

Make It Happen For Women: The Diary of a Job Searching Woman: Oct 30: The Job Searching Blow-up!

Well something has to give. I decided to revamp my resume again. Bought another book at the bookstore yesterday and will take another stab at the resume tomorrow. I sent an email out to my contacts to tell them I was still in the market and I asked them for more help.

There are two networking events with other job seekers here in my area every week. I am going to go to both next week and do some networking. I did a google search and found more recruiters. I posted my resume on some recruiter websites. Still applying to lots of job postings on the job boards, but I feel like my resume is going into a big hole. Not sure what else to do. A friend of mine that got laid off 4 months ago is still looking. I feel trapped! This job search stuff is really discouraging.

Work is crazy. My boss told me that senior management would be making more changes. I asked him what "more changes" meant. He told me not to worry. Easy for him to say, his wife works in a management job so they have two incomes. I'm a single working mom with not much savings. My kids and I deserve more than scraping by. I need to make more money, but I guess I'm lucky that I even have a job in this economy.

Then there is my career. I'm in my 40's and I have to have a plan to move up the ladder. How do you do that so I can make more money and be more secure?

On OVERWHELM. Don't even want to think about this more today. Got to go and pick up Bethany at a friend's house. They are studying for the big test tomorrow. I think I'll pick up some ice cream on the way home. That will perk me up!

Make It Happen For Women: The Diary of a Job Searching Woman: Oct 23: Networking, Resumes and Job Search.

I can't sleep. I have versions of my resume swimming around in my head.

Things are worse at work. The meeting we have all been dreading was late yesterday. They will be making cuts in the next three months. I'm supposed to come up with a game plan to lay off 20% of my team. I don't know where to start. I'm effecting people's lives and the lives of their families. Yet, I have a business to run. I have to have my new plan on my bosses desk by Monday morning. So much for working on my job search this weekend. But I am making a commitment to work at least 4 hours over the weekend sending out resumes to jobs I have seen on the job boards.

I don't know what to think about my job. I asked my boss if my job was safe in the cuts. He told me not to worry that they really needed me right now. I went home last night and looked at my bills and savings account and I couldn't last long without a job. No way! Being a single working mom is tougher than I ever thought it would be when I got my divorce.

Finding it hard to juggle doing a job search with all the issues at work.

I did have several friends pass my resume onto some recruiters...but nothing yet.

I have to stay positive. Just not sure how I can do everything I need to do.

Make It Happen For Women: The Diary of a Job Searching Woman: Oct 15: No time to look for a new job or work on my resume!

Totally frustrated today. Nothing went right at work. Everyone is at each others throats and a couple of my people "disappeared" today...wonder if they have interviews. Couldn't work on my resume this morning before work and I didn't even take a lunch and make those networking calls I promised myself that I would make.

My boss gave me another project. Wonder where I will find the time to do that. I feel like I am the rug and everyone is walking all over me and taking me for granted. When do I have the time I need for my job search?

Somethings has got to give. Seems like it's always me doing the giving.

Make It Happen For Women: The Diary of a Job Searching Woman: Oct 14: I'm moving forward - My Resume, Networking and a New Job!

Well last night I was very productive. I made a list of all the people that I know from my blackberry, my outlook and my church directory. The excel spread sheet is ready to go! I worked on my resume. Boy am I out of practice. I googled "resume formats" and a lot came up. I picked one and came up with a first draft of my resume. A friend asked me what direction I was going in my career. I told her I didn't know. One foot in front of the other, that's all I know at this point.

Before I left for the office, I emailed the first draft of my resume to a recruiter friend of mine to see what he thinks about it and it came back undeliverable. I'll take some time today at work to find out where he is working now.

I feel like I'm make the right steps and it feels good to be taking control of my job search! After all, I am a strong, independent woman who knows what she wants in life...I just have to go out and get it!

Work is still crazy, but I am focused on my future which feels really good. No drama with the kids last night. I'm finally moving ahead with my job search. Feels good to take charge of my life.
