Make It Happen For Women: The Diary of a Job Searching Woman: Mar 1 – Don’t Give Up!

Dear JobSearchingWoman:

I know that you are discouraged. I know that looking for a job is a tough time in a woman’s life. How do I know? Cause I have been there…many times.

Part of a woman’s frustrations is that she is trying to do what she’s always done which is not working in 2010. But, old habits are hard to break and the “Networking is the only way to find a job” isn’t working anymore. Only 4-10% of the people in this country get a job from a job board and for professionals it’s less than 2%. Recruiters are getting reqs from their clients that are asking for everything under the moon and that makes their job more difficult.

So…you have to do something different. But first you have to get control of your mind. Take a few minutes to sit quietly and take some deep breaths. Think of things that empower you in your life. The times when you were on top. Spend some quiet time just trying to calm your speeding heart rate.

Keeping calm and focused is the first step. I’ve asked Our Job Search Expert to blog tomorrow about some tips on helping you….so stay tuned.

Remember…women are resilient . Once we know what to do…we will chew up anything in our paths.

Hang in there….In the meantime…here are some resume tips put together by our team.

Best Regards,

Vicki

Make It Happen For Women: The Diary of a Job Searching Woman: Jan 20: Why can't I find a new job?

Why won't anyone hire me? I am GOOD at what I do! I feel like I am looking for a needle in a haystack and I'm not sure what to do at this point.

I've talked with a few more recruiters and they say my resume is good, but they can't help me either. The competition is fierce! I mean I can't even get the phone to ring!

Not sure what to do. What if I lose my job and I can't find a new one? I'm just panicking I guess. Everything is going well at work, so why am I freaking out about my job search?

I spend hours on the internet after the kids go to bed searching for jobs and reading resume tips, information about my cover letters, job search and what I can do to move my career forward. Forward? I just want to maintain at this point and not go backwards.

Maybe I should go back to school and get my MBA? Heck, I don't know what to do....

Make It Happen For Women: The Diary of a Job Searching Woman: Nov 11: Getting ready for my first interview!

I'm back in the job search game. I spent 4 hours last night researching the company on the internet. I also did some research on LinkedIn about the woman that is going to interview me on Tuesday. She is one of the Recruiters inside the company. Bought a book at the bookstore on the way home about interviewing and will read it this weekend so I am ready for the interview.

I think this new position will be good for my career. Anyway, it sounds like it.

I sent out 3 more resumes last night too. Seems I am re-energized about moving forward. That being "down in the dumps" just doesn't feel good. I hate when I go down that path.

Plugging away at work. Trying to keep everyone calm because we all know the left shoe is about to drop.

I don't care. This single working mom feels good for a change. I'm going to hold onto that for a while...while it lasts.

Make It Happen For Women: The Diary of a Job Searching Woman: Oct 30: The Job Searching Blow-up!

Well something has to give. I decided to revamp my resume again. Bought another book at the bookstore yesterday and will take another stab at the resume tomorrow. I sent an email out to my contacts to tell them I was still in the market and I asked them for more help.

There are two networking events with other job seekers here in my area every week. I am going to go to both next week and do some networking. I did a google search and found more recruiters. I posted my resume on some recruiter websites. Still applying to lots of job postings on the job boards, but I feel like my resume is going into a big hole. Not sure what else to do. A friend of mine that got laid off 4 months ago is still looking. I feel trapped! This job search stuff is really discouraging.

Work is crazy. My boss told me that senior management would be making more changes. I asked him what "more changes" meant. He told me not to worry. Easy for him to say, his wife works in a management job so they have two incomes. I'm a single working mom with not much savings. My kids and I deserve more than scraping by. I need to make more money, but I guess I'm lucky that I even have a job in this economy.

Then there is my career. I'm in my 40's and I have to have a plan to move up the ladder. How do you do that so I can make more money and be more secure?

On OVERWHELM. Don't even want to think about this more today. Got to go and pick up Bethany at a friend's house. They are studying for the big test tomorrow. I think I'll pick up some ice cream on the way home. That will perk me up!

Make It Happen For Women: The Diary of a Job Searching Woman: Oct 19: Ready for the Job Search!

I feel GREAT! My resume is done. I emailed it to 4 recruiters and to all my personal contacts.
I had several friends email back that the resume looked great. I set up search agents on some of the job boards, so now I will receive daily emails on jobs that become available. I will call two networking contacts a day and try and leave the office at a reasonable time so I can work on my job search in the evenings. My job search is officially launched!

With the kids gone for the day, the pie in the oven and a cup of cocoa, I was all set. Very productive Day! It was a great weekend and the pie turned out great.

This single working mom has everything under control!
